The restaurant visits took place partly during a press trip together with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania tourist office, but all thoughts and opinions are, as always, my own.
For me, food and coffee are always more than just something you stuff yourself with on your trip. It's through the flavors that you really get to know a place. On my trip to Usedom, I scouted out marzipan-lined cafes, sipped at cozy breweries and tasted my way through the island's restaurants. Many are located around the three imperial seaside resorts of Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck and Bansin, but there are little gems to discover all over the island. Whether you're craving a quiet coffee with a view of the sea or a cold beer in a charming beer garden, here are ten places that will make your beach holiday on beautiful Usedom even more memorable.

Restaurant Wasserschloss Mellenthin is located in the historic “water castle” from 1575 – and it looks as nice as it sounds. It serves classic German food with a cozy twist, and you can choose between sitting inside under the vaulted roof or outside in the castle garden with a view of the moat. Sunny terrace, own brewery and coffee roastery – perfect for a lunch break after sightseeing or a dinner on reindeer hides when you want to feel like a king for an evening.

4. Uwe’s Fischerhütte
Uwe’s Fischerhütte is the classic fish shop on the beach promenade in Ahlbeck where you can almost taste the sea on your plate. Here the focus is on the fish – smoked, pickled, pickled or fried – all prepared by the fishing family Krüger, who have carried on the tradition for generations. I had a fried fish with potatoes and coleslaw – simple, fresh and just as good as you would hope for on the coast.
Sit indoors or outside with a sea view and feel the Baltic Sea breezes warm your cheeks.
If you want to buy fish dishes to take home, there is Old Fish Hall next.

5. Eiscafé & Konditorei Wenish
Eiscafé & Konditorei Wenisch is a classic café in the heart of Ahlbeck, known for its homemade pastries and ice cream creations. Since 1985, the café has been the sweet heart of the town, and the nostalgic interior still gives the feeling of times gone by. After my chilly walk, ice cream didn't appeal to me that day, so I had a piece of marzipan cake and coffee instead. An excellent choice.
One thing to remember: bring cash, cards don't work here!

6. Restaurant Bernstein & Beach lounge
Restaurant Bernstein in Heringsdorf is the place where ambition meets sea views. Here, inspiring menus are served that change daily and follow the seasonal ingredients. Classic dishes always get an elegant twist. During my visit, the starter was red shrimp, mango and sushi rice, tuna on mashed potatoes for the main course and baked pears with chocolate mousse for dessert – a real explosion of flavours that made the taste buds thrive.
Don't miss the hotel bar Beach lounge before you leave – perfect for a relaxed drink to round off the evening in style.

Usedomer Brauhaus is a charming beer brewery in the middle of Heringsdorf, where rustic charm meets the scent of freshly brewed beer and German cuisine. Inside, it's warm and cozy with wooden details and soft lighting, while their beer garden in the summer offers sun, live music and nice outdoor seating. After a day in the crisp winter air, I almost felt like I had been to the mountains when I sank into the warmth of the brewery with a glass of spicy Christmas beer.

8. Café Röstwerk

After a walk along the beach, you can sink into a room that almost feels like a cozy living room and enjoy coffee that really tastes something. The beans – carefully selected from Ethiopia, Guatemala and Costa Rica – get all the care they deserve and are served in all possible variations. I tried a classic coffee with milk and was not disappointed.

10. Restaurant Heinrichs
To end the list, I offer a real classic. Restaurant Heinrichs in Heringsdorf serves a menu full of schnitzel, rump steak and other heavier, tasty dishes. Perfect when you want to eat heartily after a day at the beach or on the bike.
Be prepared for the staff not to speak English at all and there was a bit of a misunderstanding for me before I got my order right – but that's also part of the charm when traveling, isn't it?

Nice places! Expensive? Never heard of Usedom!
Usedom still feels quite unknown to us Swedes, even though it's so close! The prices at the restaurants were completely normal, I was surprised at how affordable it felt!
